What is a laparoscopic Spay?
Otherwise know as a Keyhole or Lap-Spay, it is a less invasive, advanced technique for
neutering female dogs which offers numerous benefits compared to a traditional spay
technique.
What happens during the surgery?
Two small incisions are made, and a small amount of gas is introduced internally through the first wound, to lift the body wall away from the internal organs, creating an internal ‘tent’ effect. A small camera is then inserted into the patient through the same wound to see the ovaries. Surgical instruments are inserted through the second wound to remove the ovaries. In female dogs, we only remove the ovaries and leave the womb (uterus) inside.
What are the benefits of a Laparoscopic Spay?
- Smaller wounds – the entry points are roughly 1cm long meaning a decreased risk of post operative wound complications
- In a laparoscopic spay, only the ovaries are removed and uterus is left in situ which is less traumatic than a traditional spay which removed the uterus and ovaries.
- Reduced risk of infections
- Reduce risk of bleeding
- Significantly quicker recovery time – Patients can often return to normal activity after a few days
Decreased post-operative pain
